A decent start for Tim Burton and Johnny Depp

Posted : 10 years, 11 months ago on 8 December 2013 09:08 (A review of Edward Scissorhands)

Johnny Depp has portrayed many recognizable characters (that make him unrecognizable) including Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd, Mad Hatter, Tonto and of course Captain Jack Sparrow from 'Pirates of the Caribbean', here he plays a man with razor sharp hands known as Edward Scissorhands

'Edward Scissorhands' is a decent start for Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, Tim Burton's directing and Johnny Depp's acting connect to make an interesting romantic fantasy, it is better than 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Alice In Wonderland' and is probably Johnny Depp's most famous role

An interesting plot about Edward being created by a mad inventor, who was almost finished with his task when he died and left Edward with temporary scissors in place of real hands, Edward's hands never became real and remained scissors for years

Some very good performances by supporting cast Winona Ryder, Dianne West, Anthony Michael Hall and Kathy Baker but the one who steals the show is the lead actor Johnny Depp; his performance makes up for his over the top performance as Tonto in 'The Lone Ranger'

Not recommended for younger audiences but 'Edward Scissorhands' will still be enjoyed by the target audience and Johnny Depp's performance will also be enjoyed by everyone who loves Tim Burton's movies

Bland, not very scary and poorly acted

Posted : 10 years, 11 months ago on 5 December 2013 07:44 (A review of The Woman In Black)

'The Woman In Black' was a horror movie that I was looking forward too; in the end it just turned out a fake horror

'The Woman In Black' has very little scare at all, there are about two scares, good sets and costumes but the rest...meh!

Why did they cast Daniel Radcliffe in the lead role; he was way too young and gives a poor performance just like the rest of the cast

I've never read the book or seen the stage show and they're probably not the same anyway (as you can't actually see the horror in the book)

And what a ludicrous beginning three girls walk towards the open window of their house and walk out falling to their deaths , the movie was getting scarier near the end but then the silly ending ruined it Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe's character) dies and wanders off into the light , what oh what was the reason for the poor scares, acting and story?

Director Uwe Boll's career should be slayed

Posted : 10 years, 11 months ago on 3 December 2013 04:34 (A review of In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale)

My expectations were low but I was still disappointed by 'In The Name of The King: A Dungeon's Siege Tale'

I've only seen the beginning of the first 'Lord of the Rings' but I can still say 'In The Name of The King' is a bad rip-off

There isn't a lot to describe this terrible movie but I[Link removed - login to see] Uwe Boll will never direct a movie that I will like (I haven't seen 'House of the Dead' or 'Alone In The Dark' yet). 'In The Name of the King' is so boring and it goes on forever, don't waste your time

A minor classic - not really worth watching

Posted : 10 years, 11 months ago on 3 December 2013 06:56 (A review of The Blue Lagoon)

When 'The Blue Lagoon' was released in 1980, it was a minor classic and a box office success, although when I saw it, I didn't really like it

The story (based on a novel) was pretty weak and boring. The sets, music and cinematography was pretty good but I just thought the movie was pretty bland and with very annoying performances by Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins.

It was not as bad as the sequel which was a repeated story, changed ending (from the first movie) and really stupid

To conclude 'The Blue Lagoon' is a weak romance and not really worth watching at all

Detailed, entertaining and very well acted

Posted : 10 years, 11 months ago on 30 November 2013 05:17 (A review of Saving Mr. Banks)

Before I watched 'Saving Mr Banks', I had my thoughts ('How is this going to end happy?', 'Will Tom Hanks make two successful movies this year?')

Okay, it was a pretty good movie, the cast (Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks, Paul Giamitti, Colin Farrell, Jason Schwartzman, Bradley Whitford, Ruth Wilson, Annie Buckley) gave very good performances but especially Emma Thompson, how can she NOT get even nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress, (I also hope for Sandra Bullock to be nominated for 'Gravity'), Tom Hanks wasn't as good as in 'Captain Phillips' but still not bad at all

'Saving Mr Banks' is constantly entertaining as well, especially some of the phrases ('I could eat you up!' 'That wouldn't be appropriate!') but the song 'Fidelity Fiduciary Bank' connects with what Pamela's father says in a confusing but sense full scene

To conclude, even though it is nothing amazing, it is still a good movie and will be enjoyed by those who are a die-hard of the movie 'Mary Poppins'

The best thing are the effects

Posted : 10 years, 11 months ago on 24 November 2013 06:49 (A review of Gravity)

I had been wanting to watch 'Gravity' ever since I heard of it, the poster just looks amazing but would the poster MAKE the movie amazing?

The poster didn't make 'Gravity' amazing but the movie is still just amazing! The cast (Sandra Bullock and George Clooney) gave solid performances (even though George Clooney was hardly in it) and the effects are just incredible, the 3D was also very well done and it was better than 'Apollo 13'

I wish George Clooney had had a bigger appearance though; he separates from Sandra Bullock and when he appears again, it's her imagination, it just leaves the audience wondering if he goes back to Earth later or if he dies in space

But honestly, the effects...the effects are...AMAZING! Space just looks so realistic as does Earth, when the spaceships fall apart, the pieces fly all over space, just incredible! And also when Sandra Bullock and George Clooney float around space!

Although the audience spends hardly any time on Earth, it gives children better education on Physics and will remind parents of the solar system (hopefully)

To conclude 'Gravity' is a masterpiece and a must-see for any Physics studier (you start Physics in senior school) or any space movie die-hard

One of the best music/musical movies ever

Posted : 10 years, 11 months ago on 24 November 2013 12:33 (A review of Nowhere Boy)

I'm not a huge fan of the Beatles but 'Nowhere Boy' is an interesting masterpiece

'Nowhere Boy' is one of the best movies of the year, Aaron Johnson (who is married to Sam Taylor-Wood) gave a showcase performance and stole the show, the rest of the cast (Kristin Scott Thomas, Anne-Marie Duff, David Threlfall, Thomas Brodie Sangster) were also very good however

Aaron Johnson must be one of the most talented young actors (under 25 years) ever, 'Kick-Ass' is making me insist I watch it, and I probably will do soon, anyway 'Nowhere Boy' is one of the best movies ever and a must-see for any music movie/Beatles die-hard or any decent movie lover, clever how it didn't even mention the Beatles at all

A confusing cross between interesting and dull

Posted : 10 years, 12 months ago on 23 November 2013 02:52 (A review of The Arrival of a Train at Station)

Although the only thing that happens is a train comes into a station, it is only 50 seconds, although it is dull, it is also interesting as it is one of the first movies ever and is worth a look especially if you're interested in the first movies ever

I was not disappointed, I was surprised actually

Posted : 10 years, 12 months ago on 19 November 2013 05:42 (A review of Love Actually)

'Love Actually' is just a really entertaining movie, hilarious, clever and charming

'Love Actually' features a very large collection of (mostly) English actors (Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, Martine McCutcheon, Bill Nighy, Lucia Moniz, Joanna Page, Martin Freeman, Rodrigo Stanorto, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Andrew Lincoln, Kris Marshall, Abdul Salis, Heike Makatsch, Billy Bob Thornton, Thomas Sangster, Rowan Atkinson), how could they afford most of them? There were five producers! If there were one producer, he or she would be made of money!

The connections of the stories are very clever and interesting; although Billy Mack and Joe don't connect to anyone, the rest of the connections actually work!

Emma Thompson and Bill Nighy give the best performances in 'Love Actually' and the best scene is Hugh Grant's dancing scene, there is also a very good scene where Karen realizes Harry loves someone else and puts herself together

But the epilogue is just so smart at the end and one of the best scenes in the movie, 'Love Actually' is one of those comedies where everything good occurs at the end

To conclude, it is my favorite Richard Curtis movie and a must-see for any comedy lover

The first one is much better

Posted : 10 years, 12 months ago on 19 November 2013 06:48 (A review of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason)

I love the first movie so I decided to watch 'Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason' and how was it?

Well it was pretty ludicrous and boring, the real trouble with 'Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason' is that the story is pretty bland; Bridget Jones is now with Mark but then they keep breaking up and getting back together again

Also in 'Bridget Jones's Diary', Mark and Daniel fight and interrupt a birthday party, they changed that into fighting outside a fountain and then they both fall in, why was that? Why, oh why was there any need to produce a fight not nearly as funny as the first time

I wish, 'Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason' has been more like the first one but it is nowhere near as good, to conclude it is another bad sequel and not worth watching at all, even if you're a die-hard fan of the first movie or the books
